It is sacrifice, surrender, obedience, and choosing Jesus even when it costs you something. But it is not the same as carrying shame, rejection, comparison, fear, or an identity Jesus never gave you. Maybe the invitation is not “carry more.” It is “lay down what is crushing you, take up your cross, and follow Me.” When you pick up your cross, the old no longer belongs in your hands. That is why Jesus calls us to carry it daily: surrender the old and choose Him again. When your hands are full of the cross, there is no room left for what was never from God.
